He studied design and graphics and counts among the most important representatives of Scandinavian design. He has received a number of international prizes. These include the 1958 Pro Finlandia Medal, the 1962 gold medal of the California State Fair and Exhibition, the 1965 Eurostar for packaging and the 1967 Gulden Vorm Certificate, Utrecht
Sarpaneva has been working with Rosenthal since 1971.
The service bears the name of its homeland: Suomi – Finland. Amongst other awards, it received the highest accolade the world of porcelain can bestow: The
Gold Medal of Faenza.
“Suomi” takes its inspiration from the natural charm of smooth river pebbles. The organic molding, between circle and square, has been warded the highest honor conferred in the world of porcelain: the Gold Medal of Faenza.
